Riojan Reds: Wine tours in Spain
Autumn colours in Rioja
Visiting La Rioja is an exquisite experience at any time of year but discovering the region during the autumn vendimia, or harvest, is a truly wonderful adventure. La Rioja comes alive with colour. The rolling hills with the perfect lines of prized vines appear to have been painted with vibrant red and orange inks. The soft leaves dipped in copper and gold. The sight is truly breathtaking!
Do you like the sound of this colourful show? Then how about a trip to La Guardia? Perched high on a hill this is one of Rioja’s many jewels. As well as impressive medieval walls and narrow winding streets this beautiful town boasts breathtaking views over the region. This is a perfect spot to relax, recharge, and delight in the changing Riojan colours. Or if you fancy heading up even higher, the views from the Balcón de La Rioja, in the Basque province of Alava, are impresionante!
Autumn doesn’t only signal a change of colour in La Rioja. After a long, baking summer the heat can begin to feel relentless but autumn sees perfectly warm and relaxed days which cool into crisp, fresh evenings. The change in air seems to perk up both the landscape and the locals after a sleepy summer. The countryside bustles with activity as the harvest becomes the focus of the region. Vineyards buzz with farmers picking bunches of juicy gems; jewels in the crown of Rioja.
